Regions of Africa

The Maghreb Region

Picture
The Maghreb Region contains the Atlas Mountains which take up the North and North East part of Africa.  This creates a rain shadow effect making west of the mountains wet and east of it a desert.  The Sahra Desert is the largest in the world.  This region is closely tied with Europe due to settlers called Moores.

The Nile Valley Region

Picture
The Nile Valley Region has a very diverse population.  The North section conatins Arabs, the south section of Sudan conatins Christains, and the west conatins Black African Arabs.  The Nile Valley region also conatins the largest river in the world, the Nile River.  The wierd thing about the Nile is that it runs from the south to the north.  Also in the Nile Valley region, there is a artifical lake called Lake Nasier.

Somalia and Its Troubles

The following are statements in the article Forein Policy 171:

1.  Somalia has been ripped apart by violence since the central government impoloded in 1991.

2.  The whole country has become a breeding ground for warloads, pirates, kidnappers, bomb makers, fanatical Islamist insurgents, freelance gunmen, and idle, angry youth with no education and way to many bullets.

3.  By early this year, the goverenmet's zone of control was down to a couple of city blocks.

4.  To call it even a failed state was generous.

Would I call Somalia a torn country? No, it is ten times worse.  They have been flooded with terrible people that do not have any control over themselves.  They are uneducated leaving them with crazy warlords that do not care about anyone else but themselves.  Other organizations try to help them by building mosques, schools, and social services organizations.  The warlords would try, and most of the time succeed, to destroy them.  The only people that are actually doing something in this country are the moneylords.  Moneylords are the Somalia big-bussiness owners who are holding thew country together.  They provide services such as healthcare, schools and power plants for little or no profit.  In 2006 things were looking better as warlords had been ran away but then the U.S tried to step in.  They attempted to take out Islamic leaders but ended up killing civilians.  Nothing has really changed since.  Let me leave you with two more statements from the same article.

1.  Nearly a whole generation of Somalis has absolutly no idea what a government is or how it functions.

2.  To them(Somalis), law and order are thoughly abstract concepts.  To them, the only law in the land is the business end of a machine gun.
